Financial Potential in the Classroom

If you’re reading this right now, perhaps you’re considering what to take on as part of your own Continuing Professional Development. So before making any decisions, please take a few moments to hear what we have to offer.

I’d like to show you how you can make a real difference to your students’ financial outlook once they leave you, either to continue their education elsewhere, or perhaps even to start earning a living; how you can set about helping your students to learn the things they need to know that will help them live a financially healthy life.

Firstly, let me ask you a question; if you were to go out into the street right now, and ask the first 100 adults that you met, “Do you think we should be teaching our kids at school about  money management?”, what do you imagine the answers might be?
I did just that 5 years ago.

The reason I asked that question was, quite simply, this. I had, at that time, been an Independent Financial Adviser for a number of years, and, through spending a great deal of time with literally hundreds of ordinary people, helping them with basic financial planning, I was routinely amazed at the low levels of public awareness in all matters to do with personal finance.

In those days, it didn’t seem to matter too much what I might be seeking to focus upon when talking to people about their financial plans and aspirations; I always seemed to be starting from scratch every time whenever I needed to gain someone’s understanding of my recommendations.

I also found that there was a significant level of fear in clients that they would be seen as somehow ignorant; and do you know what?  It didn’t matter what socio-economic band they were in, this fear was almost universal.

Of course, I would leave all my appointments with my client’s assurance that they understood perfectly well what I had recommended to them, but I also knew that if I were to ask the same person the following day to feed back to me even the barest essence of our meeting, he or she would, most likely have no real grasp at all on what had been said or agreed.

Imagine, if you will, what those meetings could have been like, had my clients a basic understanding of money management, we call it, in educational terms ‘Financial Capability’.

There can be no doubt that a lack of basic financial education in general has contributed greatly to hitherto unsurpassed levels of bankruptcy declarations and personal debt in our country.

So, the response I got from my question, “Do you think that we should teach our kids about money?” -- 91% said yes (in a variety of ways – some quite explicit, and the rest didn’t really understand the question!  As I said, that was a little over 5 years ago.

On the back of this experience, I decided to create a dedicated raft of work that would enable students of all ages to learn about personal finance.

If you want to make that difference, we are offering a program of financial education for students that can be delivered by the teachers already in post, as a part of extra-curricular activity.  Please understand, right up front, that you do not need to be a Maths teacher, or any other type of teacher.  All that’s required to succeed in this is basic common sense.  It works like this.

The teacher, you perhaps, will attend a day’s training, where you will be taken through the coursework from start to finish.  During that day, you will discover for yourself that this work does not need to be couched in jargon and complicated formula.  It really only needs your students to have basic numeracy skills.

Once you’ve completed the day, you’ll be given a full copy of the coursework to take away with you.  Following on from this, there is an accreditation to be obtained, and you’ll be able to gain this by first sitting a test on the course content and your understanding of it, and after that has been successfully completed there will be an observed teaching session to round off.
We will give you guidance on how to block the work out into manageable chunks for teaching purposes, and we’ll keep your materials up to date as the personal financial landscape changes.

This course, on offer to you now, deals with a hugely important subject.  There is often funding in place that will allow you train with us.
So, there you have it.  Our young people have an opportunity here to learn that there can be another way, to learn how to survive financially in life.  Moreover, they can learn from YOU, because of the level of training we can offer you, along with ongoing support that is just a phone-call or an away.
